It was inspired by the Japan student protests of 1968-1969 and the series' premise is an exaggeration of those protests and Nagai's critique of the Japanese education system. The manga was short-lived and ended shortly after one of Nagai's assistants, Ishikawa Ken, who would later go on to become a successful mangaka in his own right, quit Nagai's Dynamic Production. However, the series' principal characters: Saotome Mondo, Mido Tatsuma, and Nishikiori Tsubasa, would go on to appear in subsequent Nagai Gou works such as Violence Jack, Susanoou and Shin Mazinger Shougeki z-hen. It is set in a Japan where the aforementioned protests escalated into an all out bloody war between students and teachers. Things have gotten so tense that teachers are fully permitted to carry guns and even murder students they see as misbehaving. On the students, various guerillas roam Japan, which has become like the Wild West thanks to all the carnage, organizing the students to rise up against their teachers. The series primarily follows the adventures of one of the most infamous guerillas, Saotome Mondo, a gunslinger with no mercy to spare for any of the teachers.
