Now Viewing: violence_jackTag type: Copyright バイオレンスジャック A dark post-apocalyptic action series created by Nagai_Gou and notably one of the first manga in said genre. The manga debuted on July 22, 1973 on Weekly Shounen Magazine and ran until September 29, 1974, switched to Monthly Shounen Magazine during January 1977- December 1978 before ending up in Weekly Manga Gouraku for the rest of its run during August 5, 1983- March 23, 1990, making this series the longest running out of Nagai Gou's manga. The manga was followed by several one-shot stories. It was adapted into three OVAs, each of which cover one story arc each and were helmed by different directors, that ran from June 5, 1986 to November 9, 1990. As it only covers three arcs, the anime adaptation does not cover the manga's entire story. The manga also received multiple novel entries, two of which were written by Gou's brother Nagai Yasutaka, and all of which were illustrated by Nagai Gou. The series is set in the Kanto region of Japan, which has been completely destroyed thanks to a massive earthquake. With the collapse of civilization, comes a brutal world where the strong organize themselves into vicious gangs that prey on the weak with the cruel and sadistic Slum King being the most infamous of these newfound tyrants. In the midst of all the bloody carnage emerges a mysterious unnamed giant, armed with a jack knife. He has no memory of who he is, but he calls himself Violence_Jack_(character) after his propensity for violence as well as the bloodshed that ensues when he's around and his weapon of choice. Both the strong and the weak recognize this giant's enormous power and seek to either destroy him or gain his assistance. The series follows the adventures of Violence Jack as he roams Kanto and battles against the Slum King's forces, inspiring others in his own way to stand up to the Slum King and setting the stage for massive Warring States-esque war between various growing nations that the Slum King's forces. This series is notably the darkest and most brutal out of Nagai's work. The manga and its anime adaptations were controversial for their graphic violence and sexual content with the anime OVAs often having to contend with censorship when they were exported to other countries. Nagai rebooted the manga with Shin Violence Jack which ran from May 13, 2005 to May 11, 2008. The basic premise remains the same, but this version of the story is shorter, only consisting of one extended story arc that has Jack team up with survivors who have lived on an island since the Kanto destroying earthquake, Sara and Ushio, to fight against this continuity's incarnation of the Slum King. It also places more emphasis on supernatural horror elements which are only prominent in a few arcs of the original and its major twists place it in a different continuity from it. The original manga was remade by Kinutani_Yuu, who had previously done other revamps of Nagai Go's manga, as Violence Jack 20XX, which offers a condensed version of the original's story. The remake ran from February 19, 2021 to November 21, 2022. The series also doubles as a sort of massive crossover between Nagai's work. Many characters from his other manga appear here although their backstories and abilities are changed to fit in with the dark universe Violence Jack is set in, so the series is not in the same continuity as the characters' original series.
